Grandparents - The Legacy of Time
There is a reason why they are called “grand”. Every time we are around my girls’ grandparents I sit back in awe. They are so patient where I am irritated, so gentle where I am tough, so calm where I am out of control, so in the moment where I am distracted. The small things about my young daughters that can throw me into a childlike fit; make their eyes shine with pride and joy. Insert a long hard look in the mirror of my immature parenting. Before I start the self-shame spiral, I realize the title of grand comes with decades of wisdom. It’s a title earned with the same sleepless nights, pails full of dirty diapers, kisses on boo-boos, taming of tantrums, first day of school fears, endless cleaning of messes, teaching of all the firsts, navigating the stormy waters of puberty, mending broken hearts, and learning to let them go.
The biggest difference between being a parent and a grandparent is the gift of time.
